The organization moves beyond traditional dance forms to teach participants how all dance genres benefit mind, body and spirit.

Dancer for a Day

In addition to offering free classes, NYC Dance Week created Dancer for a Day Program to provide deserving children and young teens who are facing unique challenges in their life the opportunity to dance, even if only for a day.

Dancer for a Day is a NYC Dance Week initiative that provides youth with varied dance backgrounds the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a professional dancer.  In its sixth year, Dancer for a Day will go virtual and work with kids ages 7-18, who want to pursue dance as a career, to participate in a day filled with class taking, a nutritional workshop, and a performance & Q&A with a dance company.  We will also grant a few kids scholarship to take classes for the rest of the year.

About the Instructor: Shawn McMullen, MS

After working with a Dr. of Nutritional Medicine to rid her body of fibroids, Shawn became aware of the powerful impact our food choices have on our bodies and well-being. This experience inspired her to learn as much as she could about food and nutrition and how they can be used to improve wellness. Her inspiration led to the completion of a MS in Nutrition and Integrative Health. With a MS in Urban Affairs, Shawn has a particular interest in bringing a greater awareness of the impact of food and nutrition choices to traditionally underserved populations. She feels blessed to be able to combine both her passions.
